Retailers Pin Hopes on Tourists, Summer Shoppers as Seasonal Sales Begin (2026)

As the summer sales season kicks off, retailers are pinning their hopes on a unique trifecta: pre-holiday shoppers, a surge in tourists, and a mild summer climate. This annual event, running from July to August, is a crucial period for the retail industry, especially amidst ongoing economic challenges.

The expectations are modest, with retailers aiming for a 2-5% increase in turnover, which, if achieved, would push total sales over the 7 billion euro mark. However, the persistent pressure on household budgets, exacerbated by rising fuel and food prices linked to the Middle East conflict, has forced many consumers to tighten their belts, reducing discretionary spending.

One interesting development is the recently introduced 3-euro fee on small parcels from non-EU countries. This measure has already impacted consumer behavior, leading to a decline in purchases from Chinese online marketplaces, a trend that domestic retailers hope to capitalize on.

Official data paints a picture of limited growth. According to ELSTAT, retail turnover in the first quarter of 2026 reached 17.11 billion euros, a modest 3.2% increase from the previous year. Excluding food, vehicles, and fuel, the growth was even more subdued at 2.2%.

The performance varied significantly across business sizes. While medium-sized companies with annual revenues exceeding 10 million euros saw a healthy 7.4% increase in turnover, the smallest businesses recorded a mere 0.1% decline.

What makes this particularly fascinating is the insight it provides into consumer behavior. Despite the overall growth, the disparity between business sizes suggests that consumers are being more selective with their spending, favoring established brands and larger retailers.

Retailers are also banking on foreign visitors to boost sales. Greece's status as an affordable shopping destination, coupled with strong tourism indicators, is expected to drive demand, especially with tax-free purchases for eligible visitors.

International air arrivals have increased by 5% between January and May compared to the previous year, with a notable rebound in May after a slowdown in April. This growth in tourism has led to a 36.9% increase in travel receipts during the first four months of 2026, with revenue from both EU and non-EU travelers showing significant increases.

In terms of consumer protection, Greek rules mandate that retailers advertising discounts must display the previous price alongside the reduced price, ensuring transparency for shoppers.

As the summer sales season unfolds, it will be interesting to see if retailers' strategies pay off. With a delicate balance between economic challenges and consumer behavior, the outcome could provide valuable insights into the resilience of the retail industry.

Personally, I think this period will be a true test of the industry's adaptability and its ability to navigate economic headwinds.
